Solar panels and wind turbines representing green hydrogen production in Brazil

The H2 Project in Brazil

Green hydrogen as a strategic vector of energy transition and decarbonization of the Brazilian economy.

The H2 Project in Brazil

The Brazil-Germany Cooperation for Sustainable Development has worked for decades in the areas of sustainable energy and energy efficiency, encouraging the expansion of renewable energy supply. In this context, in 2021, the H2Brasil project was created by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with the objective of supporting the improvement of the expansion of the green hydrogen (H2V) market in the country as a fundamental part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and contributing to the decarbonization of the Brazilian economy.

In partnership with the MME, the H2Brasil project will carry out several actions, such as:

  • Elaboration of energy planning scenarios
  • Identification of needs in the current regulatory framework
  • Analysis on the implementation of an H2V certification system in the country
  • Dissemination of studies, actions and campaigns on the importance of H2V production in Brazil
  • Promotion of knowledge and experience exchanges with influencers, opinion leaders and journalists
  • Development of educational content
  • Implementation of laboratories with infrastructure for learning and professional training in H2V technologies through the training of multipliers – with a gender inclusion perspective
  • Development of technologies, ideas and innovative projects for the production of H2V and its PtX derivatives
  • Support to Brazilian universities through the installation of laboratories and exchange with German research institutions and universities
  • Support for improving the economic viability of the industrial application of green hydrogen (H2V) in Brazil through the development of financing instruments for leveraging the Brazilian H2V market and the implementation of an application cluster for pilot projects along the H2/PtX value chain.

H2Brasil also has the following implementing partners:

  • Energy Research Company (EPE)
  • National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL)
  • National Electric System Operator (ONS)
  • National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP)
  • National Industrial Training Service (SENAI)
  • Brazilian and German companies, universities, and private enterprises
  • Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK)
